THE GIFT OF A LIFETIME - WHY GIVE TO MHAUS?
The Malignant Hyperthermia Association of the United States (MHAUS) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to reducing deaths from malignant hyperthermia and other heat-related disorders by: improving medical care; providing support information for patients; and improving the scientific understanding and research related to MH and other kinds of heat-related syndromes.
In the past years, MHAUS has seen the mortality rate of MH drop from over 90% to less than 10%, an amazing achievement made possible by individuals like yourself who understand the importance of recognizing, treating and preventing this rare but life-threatening condition.
But our job is not yet done. Until every medical professional knows what to do in the event of an MH crisis, until every family member understands the genetic inheritance factors, and until researchers are able to determine not only how to treat MH but, more importantly, can also find a way to detect susceptibility before a patient’s life is at stake, we at MHAUS will not rest.
As you look back at your own successes this year, please take a moment to consider how you might support MHAUS to pursue our mission. Together, we can provide MH-susceptibles and their families with the reassurance that somehow, someday we will end the threat of MH.

OPTIONS TO MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR GIFT
Year-End Gifts
Are you interested in increasing your tax deductions? A one-time, year-end gift is entirely tax-deductible and can be ear-marked, if you so choose, towards a particular project or educational program.
Payroll Deductions
Some employers will allow you to make ongoing pre-tax deductions from your paycheck that are directly sent to MHAUS. While still affording you the tax break, this method of giving may be better suited to your financial planning needs. Talk to your personnel department about this option.
Matching Gifts
Many companies today support the causes of their employees by matching the funds donated by their employees to their favorite non-profit charities. By filling out a simple form with your personnel department, you can double the impact of your personal gifts. Check to see if your employer provides matching gifts, and if they don’t suggest a matching gift program for your company or institution.
Stocks
By turning your stocks over to MHAUS, you may avoid capital gains taxes while allowing MHAUS the benefit of the full value of your gift. For example, if you own stock recently valued at $5,000 and sell it today, you will pay $800 tax on the long term capital gain. (Note: your state may also impose a capital gain tax.) Thus, the true value to you is only $4,200. However, if you make a charitable gift of the stock, you can deduct the full $5,000 fair market value and MHAUS receives the entire $5,000 to devote to saving lives.
Wills/Estates/Endowments
These are the gifts that keep giving, whether as part of your own estate planning or in memory of a loved one. Special incentives have been set up to encourage this type of giving, such as reduced income, estate and property taxes; lower insurance upkeep costs; avoidance of capital gain taxes; fin a n c i a l security for loved ones; increased life-time income and continued use of the contributed property during your life. Trusts can be set up to ensure the continued financial security of your family and benefiting MHAUS at the same time. Discuss the options with your attorney or financial planner. By bequeathing funds to MHAUS, you will help save generations to come.
