I am new to this message board, but I did search past postings to find answers. If any of my questions are repetative, I apologize.  I was diagnosed as MH positive when I was seven after an episode during surgery.  My parents and grandparents say that my personality was changed after that to someone who experiences more anxiety and is easily angered or frustrated. Since then I have experienced what my mother always believed was awake episodes of MH, brought on my heat and stress. It is now thirty years later and I suffer from what my doctor says is the worst case of PMS that she has ever seen.  My doctor thinks that this is all related to MH and not the typical PMS triggers and we are working together to find answers.  I react strongly to any kind of medications.  I can be put on what is typically a child's dosage of medication and will have to cut that in half because of my reactions.  I was, until recently taking Xanex for my anxiety and mood swings, but have since switched to Lorprazam.  My doctor and I are trying to wean me off this type of medication even though I take very small amounts.  We are hoping to find some kind of antidepressant to help, however one pill of prozac produced a negative reaction, so anything in that drug family is off limits.  I also can't take anything hormmonal given my family history with cancer.  I am scheduled to see a doctor of internal medicine who specializes in anxiety.  Is there anything that I might recommend to her to test for or look for?  I am tired of this roller coaster ride I seem to be on and I really would like some help or suggestions.  Does anyone else experience these type of symptoms or have a history similar to mine with a changed personality?  Please let me know your thoughts and experiences.  If any physicians are out there doing any studies related to this please contact me.  My other e-mail address is (jviar@co.summit.ut.us.)  My phone number during the day is (435)615-3210.  My evening number is (435)783-2832.  Thanks.

I had an episode in 1966, and my family reported that I came out of it with a dramatic personality change. They talked with the doctors multiple times about it and were told that it was not possible. I was 9 at the time.

Hi,

I was diagnosed with MHS in 1981 (I think) it may have been 1980. During a (should have been) routine tonsillectomy (attempted) I had my only documented MH episode. I woke up in ICU attached to a lot of machinery, IVs, cardiac monitors, catheters (my kidneys were totally jacked up), on an air mattress filled with cold water, had been packed in ice...etc. Luckily, the anesthesiologist on my case had recently learned about MH and spotted my CO2 and elevated temp symptoms and ordered Dantrolene Sodium. After this my mother and I underwent the biopsy tests at a medical research facility and I was the real deal MHS, while she was only a partial. Anyway--today I have many of the same symptoms posted by Juliana. Child dosages of meds--though I still have many responses to them that are either contrary to ones listed as possible side effects--or they are intense responses. I am extremely emotional and often have HIGH ANXIETY or mood swings. I experience exercise induced cramps and prolonged muscle pain with an inability to "relax" the muscles--intensely so when I overwork--I am a yoga and fitness instructor--so these symptoms occur too often with me. I think the emotional relationship between MH and anxiety could be real--if this muscular condition simultaneously affects the CNS (which is responsible for our calming or fight/flight instincts) then maybe there's a link. I am not a medical professional and can only speak from the life I lead--most of it having been as a diagnosed Full Blown MHS. Anyway--I just thought it might help to know someone else in the world with MH shares some of the same issues. AND--I was prescribed phenergan once for migraines and took it and was KNOCKED OUT deep sleep for almost a day--then a couple of days later began having INTENSE muscle spasms. Subsequent to that response I learned MH+ folks should never take Phergean and should avoid that class of drug.

If anyone knows anything about extreme muscle destruction (for lack of a better term) in work out resulting in muscle swelling, edema, pain, fatigue, etc...please let me know.

thanks! Stacy
